The Girl With The Dragon Tattoo - World Premiere - Inside Arrivals

At this point, it’s common knowledge for those who have been following Rooney Mara’s The Girl With the Dragon Tattoo transformation that the film role as left a bit of a permanent mark on her personal style. In addition to holding onto to the short bangs and nipple ring, she recently told Allure that she “used to wear a lot of girly, frilly things” and now “buys things that are more comfortable, and more utilitarian, and sort of boyish.”

While not exactly boyish, her red carpet and promotional appearance looks have all been thoughtful, with a gothic vibe and a little severe. The Prabal Gurung, Givenchy couture, Roksanda Illincic, YSL and Rodarte pieces we’ve seen her in have felt Lisbeth-appropriate, in a more formal, fashion-y way. For some reason, she also seems very committed to revealing the sides of her torso in every dress. The result has been stunning and captivating every time and keeps us wanting more.

The Obamas make us smile. They just seem like such a tight-knit, happy (and gorgeous) family unit. The White House just released the first official presidential family portrait since 2009 and it just oozes festive love. Our family Christmas cards certainly didn’t look this good. Read more »

It’s that most magical time of the year. No, not the holidays–it’s spring ad campaign reveal season! Today’s present is Gisele Bundchen for Versace, shot by Mert Alas and Marcus Piggott. No, don’t try to adjust your screen; it’s supposed to look like that. Read more »

Donna Karan’s spring 2012 collection was heavily influenced by the time the designer spent in Haiti following the earthquake–so it was only fitting that she shoot her spring ad campaign there. “Bringing awareness to Haiti has become a personal passion,” Karan said in a release. “For Spring, it was also my creative inspiration, bringing my two worlds together. This campaign, shot in Jacmel, infuses the vibrant spirit of Haiti into a sexy New York sophistication.”

Net-a-Porter, who will soon be the exclusive carrier of Karl by Karl Lagerfeld, just revealed three new looks from the buzzed-about new masstige collection. From what we can tell, the collection will feature lots of black, sleek silhouettes, leather and cool accessories–a girly interpretation of Karl’s uniform.

According to a release (in which there are thankfully no excessive K’s), there will be 70 pieces available on Net-a-Porter beginning January 25 and prices range from $50 for a canvas bag with Karl’s face on it to over $1,000 for leather pieces.

Click through for a sneak peek. We’re particularly into the shoes, detachable collars and that sweatshirt. So, what’s the verdict? Has Karl succeeded at affordable luxury?

Love it or hate it, Fashion’s Night Out is slated to return this coming September for the fourth year in a row. While organizers can’t commit to a date yet because fashion week schedules are still being worked out, it is usually held on the first Thursday evening of New York Fashion Week. Which means it will most likely take place on either September 6 or September 13 in 2012. Stores who wish to participate can start registering this spring.

Anna Wintour’s pet project has grown exponentially since it first debuted in 2009. Most recently, a slew of Vogue magazine editors descended upon Tokyo for its post-tsunami comeback FNO–more than 400 retailers in Japan participated. It’s expected that about 250 US stores will participate this year.

After this last FNO, we asked: Do people actually shop? Is it worth it?

LOS ANGELES–Rachel Zoe couldn’t help but sparkle (literally, in a burgundy sequined Yves Saint Laurent culotte jumpsuit) last night as she hosted a soiree at the Sayers Club in Hollywood–in honor of, well, herself. The celebrity stylist celebrated the launch of the Zoe Media Group, her leading women’s digital company that has expanded beyond its flagship property, The ZOE Report, to include ZOE Beautiful (body, hair, makeup, skincare and style how-to’s) and AccessZOEries (bags, shoes, jewelry and more). And while a trendy crowd filled the sexy hotspot venue (helmed by Sam Nazarian and his SBE crew), we noticed there was nary a celebrity (Nicole Richie? Molly Sims? Kate Hudson?) in sight. Surprising turnout, considering Zoe’s pull amongst Hollywood’s A-list. We caught up with the multi-tasking mom and media mogul to see what was literally going on.

Elizabeth Taylor’s Old Stuff Continues to Sell: … at record prices. The late actress’ costume from her iconic role in Cleopatra sold for $62,500, with one of her several wedding gowns also selling for that much. What’s this about a worldwide financial crisis again? {Bloomberg}

Levi’s is Showing at Fashion Week: It seems like these days, if you have the funds, you too can put on a show at Mercedes-Benz Fashion Week. Levi’s is set to show their Fall 2012 collection in a presentation creative director Len Peltier says will be “more interactive than just a runway show.” Sounds like a lot of fuss for some t-shirts and jeans. {WWD(Subscription required)}

Pregnant Julia Restoin-Roitfeld Continues Working as Usual: The NY Post seems to be impressed that Julia Restion-Roitfeld has not retired to her bed now that she is in her second trimester. Not only did Ms. Roitfeld manage to pull herself away from the pickle jar to celebrate the launch of her capsule collection for lingerie brand Kiki de Montparnesse, but she also posed for the brand while she was two months pregnant. Wow! Modeling while you’re not even showing? Risking people thinking you’re just gaining weight? How brave! {NY Post}
