I wouldn’t be surprised if “confection” was the word most frequently used to describe Marc Jacobs’ super pretty, lace-y, pastel-filled, carousel-set spring 2012 offerings for Louis Vuitton. So, it follows that the ad campaign would be set up in a pink and white ice cream parlor. Read more »

Peep Louis Vuitton’s Super Sweet Spring 2012 Ad Campaign Starring Daria Strokous, Kati Nescher and Ice Cream Sundaes
By Dhani Mau
An investigative report from Bloomberg reveals that the “fair-trade, organic” cotton used in many of Victoria’s Secret’s products is actually produced by a company that largely relies on forced child laborers.
The report follows the heartbreaking story of 13-year-old Clarisse, who works at a Burkina Faso farm that supplies much of Victoria’s Secret’s cotton. Clarisse recounts the back-breaking working conditions she endured, which had her help dig over 500 rows to sow the cotton “with only her muscles and a hoe, substituting for the ox and the plow the farmer can’t afford.” If she slows down in the 100 degree heat, she says the farmer, her cousin and foster parent, “whips her across the back with the tree branch and shouts at her.” She is not paid and most times she is fed but once a day. Other days she doesn’t eat at all. The result of her toil, and the toil of many “foster children” in similar situations in Burkina Faso, went into the colorful thongs and undies that Victoria’s Secret is so well known for–the company purchased all of Burkina Faso’s organic crop from last season, and was expected to get most of this season’s crop as well.

Valentino Doesn’t Think Raf Simons is the ‘Right Person’ for Dior (But the Staff at Dior Does)
By Leah Chernikoff
Time for the design community to weigh in on the possibility of Raf Simons at Dior!
From Mr. Valentino Garavani himself, when asked by Vogue UK whether he thought Simons was a good fit for the job:
“I’m not sure – it’s an amazing job, I don’t know if he would be the right person for it. John Galliano is difficult to replace. I think it’s important not to jump into things. It needs to be a logical continuation of the brand. But who am I to say anything? I guess we all just have to wait and see.”
Michael Kors just got a lot richer. The company’s initial public offering raised a whopping $944 million in Hong Kong on Wednesday, valuing the company at $3.8 billion, according to the Financial Times. Now that’s a lot of cheddar.
The success of the IPO outshot financial analysts’ predictions, which previously said the company would sell stocks priced between $17 and $19. Instead, Michael Kors Holdings set the stock price higher, at $20, and still watched the shares fly off the proverbial shelf. Apparently, the stock is already so popular that, according to WWD, it was oversubscribed (financial speak for when the demand exceeds the supply) by 10 times. The stock sale even beat out the banner $882m offering of Ralph Lauren in 1997, making it the biggest-ever public offering in US fashion, according to the Financial Times.

H&M Tapped Sofia Coppola To Direct the Marni for H&M Commercial and Print Campaign
I’m not sure if I’ve ever been this excited for an ad campaign for a collection before. Perhaps because it’s pretty unusual to promote an ad campaign before it’s even been released, but when Sofia Coppola is involved and it’s for a highly-anticipated H&M designer collaboration, we want all the details we can get.
So, WWD announced today that H&M’s upcoming collaboration with Marni will be promoted with a print ad as well as an advertising film that will run in cinemas, television and online–all of which were directed by Ms. Coppola. She shot the ad in gorgeous Marrakech, Morocco in October.

Thought the fashion month show scheduling nightmare was over? Nope, it just got way more complicated. France’s Chambre Syndicale has been weirdly quiet while New York, London, and Milan have been battling over show dates. Until now, that is. They just dropped a bomb that essentially pits New York against the rest of the fashion world.
If you’ll recall, the latest development seemed hopeful for a scheduling resolution: New York agreed to move its spring show dates back to September 6, 2012, and Milan and London agreed to a subsequent second Thursday of the month New York start date for the 2013 and 2014 seasons. But Milan had two conditions: They wanted New York to cut its fashion week by one day so that editors could make it to London’s menswear shows (which are usually eclipsed by the first day of Milan shows), and that all the cities–Paris included–had to agree.
Well, Paris doesn’t agree.

Inez van Lamsweerde & Vinoodh Matadin have quietly put together a coffee table book of unforgettable photographs spanning the couple’s 26-year career and romantic relationship. Pretty Much Everything (Taschen) will pretty much cost you an arm and a leg with a price tag of $700 for the 342-page limited edition tome, which includes contributions by Olivier Zahm, Penny Martin, Michael Bracewell and Bruce Sterling.
If that seems worth it, Amazon appears to have two copies available to get in time for Christmas. If not, Style.com has a slideshow of 15 of their most memorable photographs, with insightful commentary from Inez and Vindoodh about their shoots and subjects like Kate Moss (the above photo is their favorite they’ve taken of her).
Meenal Mistry also did an in-depth interview with the couple for Style.com’s “Image Makers” series. Click through for the most interesting tidbits about them, putting flowers in Bill Murray’s hair, their favorite models, their stance on under-18 models and making Lady Gaga cry.

The 15 Most Stylish Music Videos of 2011
Music—especially the men and women who make it—has served as inspiration in the fashion world for decades, and this year we felt it more than ever.
Everywhere we turned, musical muses were popping up in the front rows of runway shows (in some cases, even on the runway), as well as on magazine covers month after month. The fascination fashion has with music must go both ways, because artists have recently stepped up their style game in their music videos as well, wearing pieces from the world’s most prestigious fashion houses and custom couture creations that would make even the most snobbish of editors drool.
The 2011 crop of music videos featured everything from ’90s supermodels to rampant fashion photography references, and we’ve picked the 15 videos that we believe really stood out in the style department. Which one did you watch on repeat?

Women Are Getting Their Muffs In a Huff: A Backlash Against the Brazilian Is Upon Us
There’s been a lot of talk lately about bikini waxing, from the reasons it’s so popular, to the surprisingly young ages that girls start doing it. But the conversation just got a little louder–and more high brow.
The Atlantic just published an extensive article about Brazilian bikini waxes and the story’s racked up about 300 comments and counting. And London hosted the Muff March this past weekend, to protest the proliferation of vaginal plastic surgery options. We’re obviously in the midst of Vaginageddon here.
There seem to be a few obvious historical points in pop culture that point to who’s to “blame” for the reason female pubic hair is going extinct. The Atlantic traces the timeline nicely:
