We’ll cut right to the chase: A lot of crazy shit happened in the fashion world this year. While the industry that we call home can sometimes seem isolated and fantastical, many of its key players and events made headlines even in the mainstream media over the course of 2011.

In the last 365 days, we’ve seen our share of ups and downs: There have been exciting new beginnings and tragic falls from grace. A royal wedding and a Sarah Burton for McQueen dress captivated the world, while Galliano’s dress for Kate Moss made the fashion world swoon. We’ve celebrated the return of older models—like when 46-year-old Kristen McMenamy wore a bikini on the cover of Vogue Italia—and saw plenty of controversy surrounding very young ones. Just when we thought the boundaries of gender identity were breaking for good and that Lea T could kiss Kate Moss on the cover of LOVE, a men’s mag openly calls androgynous model Andrej Pejic a “thing.” We took it all in stride, and we’ve hopefully come out better on the other side.

Looking back at 2011, we’ve chosen twenty major moments that we believe defined the year in fashion. Which one made the biggest impact on you?

CFDA Agrees to Move S/S NYFW Dates: In the latest S/S Fashion Week scoop, the CFDA agreed to move NY Fashion Week to September 6-13, but won’t eliminate the second Thursday to allow for more men’s shows in London. It also agreed to revisit its scheduling after three years, instead of setting future dates in stone. No word yet from Italy. As Geri Halliwell famously said in the timelessly classic film Spice World, “have [they] not heard of compromisation?” {WWD}

Is Rudolph Cuter Than Karlie? Rudolph the Red Nosed Reindeer, which has aired multiple times annually since 1964, pulled in 1.6 million more viewers last week than this year’s Victoria’s Secret Fashion Show. Maybe these stats will inspire VS to put some claymation models down the runway next year. Fingers crossed. {Washington Post}

Chanel Pre-Fall 2012

Leave it to Karl Lagerfeld to infuse all the decadence, luxury and over-the-top theatrics of the regular show season into the smaller, less-glitzy (until now) Pre-Fall season for Chanel.

Set in the Grand Palais in Paris, models walked a circular runway bordered by two lavishly set long banquets piled high with fruits, flowers, candelabras and there was even a silver toy train that delivered decanters of liquor to guests (according to Style.com). In other words, it was fit for a king–or, in this case, a Raj.

Tavi Gevinson snagged yet another dream interview with an icon from her favorite decade (the ’90s). A photograph of Chloe Sevigny with hearts around it is currently on the homepage of Rookie, with a headline that doesn’t really do the interview justice: “Chloë Sevigny Makes Really Cute Clothes.”

While true, Sevigny also proves that she’s undeniably cool (which we of course already knew), a little troubled and surprisingly relatable. She chatted with the 15-year-old editor at Opening Ceremony in NYC (her resort collection for the retailer just hit stores) about designing clothes, teen angst and being an outsider. Here are the best bits:

Sally Singer, the former Vogue features and fashion news editor, is celebrating her one year anniversary as the editor-in-chief of the New York TimesT Magazine. New York Magazine sat down with the editor for a pretty enlightening interview in which she talks about her thoughts on photo retouching, the nuttiness that is street style now, and what it was like to work at Vogue. Here are the best nuggets from the interview:

More details have emerged about Karl Lagerfeld’s affordable priced line ‘Karl,’ thanks to, of all the unlikely places, Europe’s biggest tech conference, Le Web.

Lagerfeld was on-hand at the conference as a keynote interviewee, and in between drawing a picture on his iPad (of himself, naturally) and eliciting gasps from the tech-savvy audience for saying he didn’t use email (according to the WSJ blog), the high-profile designer divulged more information about his ‘Karl’ line and showed a preview of the collection. Barnard College puts out a great fashion mag called Hoot, and you might recognize the name of one of the contributors to their latest issue: It’s Cathy Horyn. The Times critic is a Barnard alum and she wrote a thoughtful piece for Hoot about how she got where she is today, and shared her advice to future fashion writers. She also has a very specific idea for the kind of blog you should start.

Horyn says she always knew she wanted to be a newspaper reporter but “in the post-Watergate era, many young people had the same idea,” so she went to J-school at Medill at Northwestern and started work as a copygirl at the Chicago bureau of the AP on the weekends. After graduating, Horyn applied to 75 newspapers and “received two positive replies,” one of which was from The Virginian-Pilot in Norfolk. She took the job and covered the school board. Doesn’t sound like the path to a career in fashion journalism, right? Well, that’s kind of Horyn’s point:

jeffry-aronsson

Things aren’t looking good at the house of Emmanuel Ungaro. In fact, they haven’t for a while. Just three months after Giles Deacon left his roughly year-long tenure as creative director, WWD is reporting that the company’s new CEO, Jeffry Aronsson, is leaving, as well as much of the house’s advisory committee.

Aronsson has only been with the company since June and was brought in with the hopes of turning the failing company around, as he is considered to be a “turnaround expert,” based on successful CEO positions at Donna Karan International, Marc Jacobs International and Oscar de la Renta previously.

Angry Birds and eveningwear: The two go hand-in-hand, no? Well at least in the case of Teija Vesterbacka they do.

Vesterbacka, who happens to be married to a Rovio executive (Rovio is the company that created Angry Birds), wore a floor length ball gown bearing the unmistakable face of the red bird from the popular video game to an independence day celebration at the Finish Presidential Palace, according to Jezebel.
