Candice Swanepoel's shoulders look buff in an old Victoria's Secret catalog

When you open a glossy magazine–whether it’s a model in an editorial in Vogue, a CoverGirl, or a celebrity in US Weekly staring back at you–is what you’re seeing real? How altered, airbrushed, Photoshopped and retouched are the people we see in ads and magazines?

A lot of people are asking these questions lately. Recently, the New York Times published an article about a computer algorithm for figuring out how much an image has been retouched–and it seems to have touched a nerve.

And where beauty ads are concerned–when retouching can actually mislead customers–steps are being taken to scale back on the post-production, or at least make plain that alterations took place. The UK released a series of advertising guidelines this past spring requiring cosmetics companies to disclose when they manipulate ads post-production. The US may start to do the same in the wake of the recent Taylor Swift CoverGirl mascara ad controversy. The National Advertising Division, a watchdog group, opted to ban the ads, prompting discussion that other cosmetics ads in the US could come under investigation.

But retouching has been around for almost as long as photography has–itʼs not a new concept. So why all the recent fuss?

Olivier Theyskens sat down with Into the Gloss to talk everything from designing for himself (as a cool girl), how he learned to accept his appearance as a teenager, and why he loves New York (Hint: manicurists!).

Here are the best bits.

On his design mentality:

There’s been this shift in my mind that I basically…more and more put myself mentally in the place of girls. To imagine girls—would I like this if I was there? Would I want to dress like that? Would I like to wear that jacket? If I had that jacket, what pants would I really like to wear with it to look cool? That’s how I sort of evolved with designing. That’s maybe why—even the way I see my outfits even on the [Theyskens’ Theory] catwalk, they do not look like me as a designer, like I’m showing some impressive design. It’s more like me as I imagine I would like my clothes to be if I was a cool girl. [ed note: That explains the underwear] It’s very different from before, because it’s less seen from outside. It’s less that I look at the girl from outside, as a figure. It’s a mental shift, I think.

Stylist-turned-reality star-turned-designer Rachel Zoe has certainly taken a turn for the chic with her Pre-Fall collection, incorporating more tailored shapes into her generally bohemian style. Her designs this season are all about structure and lush materials, with a not-so subtle nod to the ’60s and ’70s. Military detailing plays a strong role in separates and outerwear, with brightly colored slim coats getting the double-breasted Sgt. Pepper treatment.

The ’70s are still very much here, in the form of slim (and insanely flattering) to-the-floor flares, pussy bow blouses and dresses, and super glam shaggy fur vests. Slim-fit jackets toughen up ultra-feminine maxi dresses; thigh-high slits and tattered hemlines add a rocker vibe to otherwise sophisticated pieces.

Brad Goreski has a new show, burgeoning career as a stylist and a penchant for wearing really adorable bowties–But of course all anyone wants to talk about is what went down with Rachel Zoe, when the two parted ways earlier this year. And we can see why, because damnit if a good he-said-she-said isn’t always juicy.

In a recent interview with The Daily Beat, Goreski says that Zoe’s accusations of betrayal are completely false. “I think it’s unfortunate that she decided to take the angle that she did because it’s not the truth,” he said. “It’s unfortunate that all of the time that I spent with her, and the many lengthy conversations that we had discussing my departure from working with her, that she would choose to character assassinate me on television.”

Michael Pitt is Prada’s New Face

Wednesday, Dec 21, 2011 / 10:37 AM

Boardwalk Empire actor Michael Pitt is the face of Prada’s spring/summer 2012 menswear campaign. Shot by David Sims, the campaign features Pitt as a ’50s golden age of Hollywood icon. Per the press release, Pitt, in this campaign, “explores the language of male role
models from the rock star to the playboy, from the self-reflective introvert to the engaging and humorous farceur.” The campaign is also meant to serve as commentary on the contemporary man. “Contemporary men work when they play and play when they work,” the release states. “The boundaries are no longer clear – as the campaign’s simple props and gestures emphasize.”

Funnily enough, this isn’t the fist time Michael Pitt has been approached to front a Prada campaign. Read more »

Right now, all eyes might be on what Kate Middleton is wearing–but come March 2012, the Duchess of Cambridge will have another Princess’ wardrobe to contend with. London’s Kensington Palace is set to unveil an exhibit dedicated to Princess Diana’s celebrated fashion and a few of her most famous gowns will be on display, WWD is reporting.

The exhibit, called “Diana,” will have a set created by interior designer Finola Inger, and Julie Verhoeven has designed bespoke wallpaper that highlights the late Princess of Wales’ key fashion moments. Among the dresses on display will be a fuchsia silk chiffon sari-style dress and an ivory silk crepe dinner dress, both designed by Catherine Walker, a black and white cocktail dress by Bellville Sassoon Lorcan Mullany and a black silk shift dress by Versace.

But the pièce de résistance is a black silk taffeta Emanuel gown, which cemented Diana’s status as a fashion icon when she wore it to an event 10 days after her engagement to Prince Charles was announced, on the couple’s first official public outing (the design duo Elizabeth and David Emmanuel later designed Diana’s wedding dress).
