Last week we reported that the Kardashian family was in talks with American Media Inc. (the same publishers of Star, National Enquirer, Reality Weekly and Shape) to launch their very own magazine. We thought it was a bit strange considering the reality TV family is reportedly set to sue Star magazine over their child labor story expose, but hey, we stopped trying to figure out the Kardashians’ ways long ago.
This week, however, the plot has thickened. An anonymous emailer tipped us off to website k3mag.com, suggesting that it was a mockup of the Kardashians’ soon-to-be-launched publication. Indeed, along with images of magazine covers, the site reads “Editorial Prototypes,” and it does in fact look like something a company might use to develop a new product. But the site isn’t run by AMI–it’s owned and operated by Canadian company Communiqis. “I don’t think American Media Inc. has won the contract,” the tipster wrote. Hmm…
So could this be the reality TV family’s new magazine? According to Communiqis’ founder Brian Rushton Phillips: Maybe. “It’s related to the Kardashians, in a way, yes,” he told us over the phone. “We pitched it to them–to Kris Jenner–on December 15 and we’re waiting to hear back.” Brian says his company, which specializes in interactive digital media that is optimized for computers, smartphones and tablets, came up with the idea for K3 when they noticed how large the Kardashian girls’ Twitter following was. “We thought this could be a good way to harness [their following], with a a digital magazine that could be distributed through Twitter.” According to Brian, K3 would be “a beauty and fashion magazine that the girls would curate.”
Despite the fact that we’re perennially sick of the Kardashians, K3 actually sounds like a pretty cool idea. There’s just one problem: The Kardashians have yet to get back to Communiqis. And since the Canadian company pitched the idea to the family on December 15, a good three weeks before news broke that the Kardashians were in talks with AMI about launching their own magazine, well, let’s just hope the Kardashians aren’t planning to take Communiqis’ idea and run with it.
