Azealia Banks Wishes More Designers Would Send Her Clothes

LONDON-Azealia Banks didn't make an appearance at New York fashion week, and we found out why yesterday at the Tophsop Unique show: She's been touring. But she got some front row experience in London, first hitting up Mulberry bright and early, then at Topshop Unique later in the afternoon. We chatted with her before the Unique show, while the photogs were busy bothering Olivia Palermo. Wearing a skintight Unique dress from Topshop's spring 2012 collection, she was friendly and approachable, and seemed genuinely excited to be at the show. I said to her that it seems like she's sort of burst onto the music and fashion scene simultaneously, and asked if she had always had an interest in fashion.

"I like to look good but I could never really afford anything," she said. "So when I was 17, 18...you're just wearing what you can pull from the thrift stores, so I was wearing a lot of vintage Coach and vintage Versace jackets with Nike suits and stuff."

But surely designers are sending her a lot of stuff now, right? "Not as much as I would like!" she said, laughing. Pretty sure that's going to change really soon.

Because it is my job to notice such things, I also asked her about her newly purple hair, which she had just dyed this week. This led to the story of how her "212" braids came to be, which have become a bit of a signature--or at least the way by which people seem to recognize her. "The braids aren't actually a look! I was wearing the braids because it was raining on my hair," she told me. "It was misting outside when we shot the video and my hair was like [holds her hands apart] this big. I was like, 'Oh my god I'm gonna look like shit in my video. I've gotta do something.'"

The singer will be back in London this Tuesday night, where she'll perform at a Topshop party. For the sake of her hair, I hope it's not raining.
