Milliner Gigi Burris on Her Fashionable Friends, Being an 'Alligator Guru,' and Her Sleep No More Inspired Collection

The scene at Thursday night's Gigi Burris presentation at the dungeonous Electric Room was something out of a subversive dream. Handcrafted hats, headbands and fascinators dotted the room, breathing life into moss and feather-adorned cages. The place smelled vaguely of brewing potions and guests, sipping on Kanon Organic vodka, looked more than a little bewitched. Despite the foreboding atmosphere, the incredibly accomplished attendees were more than happy to gush over lady of the night, milliner Gigi Burris. "Girls in their twenties will start adopting hats," enthused WWD's Senior Accessories Editor Roxanne Robinson-Escriout. "You can thank Kate F*cking Middleton for that!" A sentiment with which ELLE Style Director Kate Lanphear heartily agreed: "I definitely predict a resurgence of glamour," she told us. "That whole ritual of getting ready is somewhat of a lost art and that's what this collection represents—a return to caring." And while it was easy to get lost in the scene, the hats, if you can even call them that, so painstakingly constructed and reminiscent of countless films, iconic women and more than a few fetishistic references, the true highlight was chatting with Burris herself, who was warm, girlish and downright delightful.

Fashionista: This is amazing. It kind of looks like Sleep No More in here! Gigi Burris: Well that's so funny you say that, because my best friend Niia [Bertino], who's singing, performs at Sleep No More! You can catch her after the after party where she'll not only sing, but she also did all the music. I'm so happy that you said that, because we really tried to capture that spirit. Fashionista: Kate Lanphear is here and is a big supporter of your brand, how did you two get connected? Gigi Burris: She's my best friend. My best friends are Kate, Niia and [Allure Accessories Director] David Thielebeule and they've all been just so supportive. She's been such a mentor and I take her advice very seriously. We've just been friends for a really long time. She's so inspiring! Fashionista: I read that the Electric Room is the hardest door to infiltrate in N.Y.C., so how are we here right now? Gigi Burris: [Nightlife impresario] Angelo Bianchi is one of my nearest and dearest. He totally set me up. We're also having the after party here tonight. He's a great friend so it's crazy for me to hear that he's so strict at the door because it's nice to have him usher you right in. Fashionista: If you were making a 'Sh*t Fashion Girls Say' video, what would be the Gigi Burris addition? Gigi Burris: I've been known as somewhat of an alligator guru, because I use a lot of skins, so people will come to me and ask me, 'Is this real or embossed?' And I'm like sweetie, you are a total #shitfashiongirlssay.
