“I love him,” the petite singer gushed about Rodriguez. “He’s a good friend and I love his style. He’s been there for special moments for me.”
The designer’s crowd of supporters included serious industry heavy hitters like Grace Coddington, Suzy Menkes, Inez Van Lamsweerde and Raf Simmons. The big commotion took place when Golden Globe winner Claire Danes walked in with cutie husband Hugh Dancy. She’s a big Rodriguez fan and friend and even chose the designer to create her wedding gown when she married Dancy.
As for the actual runway show, Rodriguez took his minimalism to the next level with structured and architectural lines and geometric shapes, but sneaking in carefully mastered detail like thoughtful draping, asymmetrical layering and mixing of tones and textures. The colors were earthy and 70s-ish like chartreuse, rusty orange, loden green, deep wine and shades of grey, and the mixed-textures luxurious: Silk, wool, tweeds and waxy-coated cotton. Even the styling was structured; the models were sporting slicked, severe side-twisted mullet-dos and serious blue steel gazes.
Rodriguez also gave us a peek at his upcoming and luxe collection of shoes and bags that he’s launching for Fall 2012. So look out for color and exotic-skin blocked mid-calf stiletto boots and d’orsay pumps in the fine shoe department. (We’re curious what the price tag for the black alligator and navy ostrich boots will be.) The handbags were equally plush: Structured calf and precious-skin satchels, duffels and totes.
“I thought it was beautiful as always,” Claire Danes told us after the show finished as she was presumably rushing to catch a late Valentine’s Day dinner with Hugh. “Just breathtaking. So smart and so sassy and sexy.”
