Wes Gordon is another one of those designers who has grown substantially since showing his first collection just three seasons ago, both in his skill as a designer and the attention he’s getting. A testament to, and perhaps cause of that growth comes from Fashion Group International, who recently bestowed the prestigious Women’s Rising Star RTW award onto the 25-year old designer.
Case in point: the line to get into his presentation, which had a pretty large capacity, was one of the longest I’ve ever seen. However, it was 100% worth the wait. Without a doubt, this was his best collection yet. Every look was a perfect example of this undone luxury he does so well, like a cashmere knee-length coat with this intricate shredding and embroidery detail on the sleeves that made us really appreciate the presentation format because it was the kind of thing you needed get a closer look at. So were a pair of silk tulle-veiled metal embroidered pants. The attention to detail was unreal.
Last season, Gordon was inspired by Kate Middleton and this collection had a similarly relevant but perhaps darker starting point. “It’s Rooney Mara meets Great Expectations,” the designer told us. “I think it’s the attitude, what [Mara] represents. It’s that darkness; it’s that bite. This is certainly a more accessible version of Dragon Tattoo. It’s not that same extreme, but I think taking a little pinch of that and adding it to the luxe fabrics we use and embroideries it gives it something really cool and mysterious.” We could instantly see Mara wearing a number of the looks.
There were definitely som red carpet-worthy moments, from a green duchess satin gown paired with a fox stole, to a chantily lace and silk tulle embroidered gown. Even a chainmail embroidered tank tucked half-hazardly into a saffron basketweave belle skirt would be a perfect choice for a starlet who thinks outside the box.
We spotted Ken Downing, Joanna Hillman and Virginia Smith among the crowd, all of whom looked pleased. Expect big things from this one. Click through to see the full collection.
