Over the past few seasons, Coach has gradually been stripping down the logos and embellishments and introducing simpler, more timeless pieces into their collections. And when they did, it was met with tremendous approval by the fashion industry, including us. Their collaboration with Net-a-Porter on a "classics" collection was an office obsession and when last season's press preview was held in the company's archives, we were honestly a little more interested in the archival pieces than the new ones. If, like us, you've always preferred a vintage Coach bag to the logo-covered shoulder bags of high school, you're going to die over this new collection.
The brand new Legacy Collection is huge and includes not only handbags, but also small leather goods, iPad cases, shoes, outerwear, hats and even desk accessories--all of which have a simple, well-crafted, timeless-yet-stylish aesthetic. Basically, I want to just throw out everything I own and replace it with this stuff.
Many items, from a men's rucksack to a women's poncho to the iconic bucket bag, were directly inspired by archival pieces, but modernized with a more practical shape or relavant colorway. The Coach logo was as minimized as ever. On some pieces, you had to get up close just to see it.
Our personal favorites included the updated bucket bags, which will come in a variety of colors, a range of small shoulder bags, a colorblocked saddle-type bag, and some very cute loafers--all of which feature a great leather tassel, which could be seen throughout the collection. We also loved a sleek pair of chelsea boots, a pair of waterproof ankle boots with a wedge heel--maybe the cutest rain boots ever--and clutches--which Coach doesn't really ever do. Also really, really good: offerings for men, which we heard received a positive response from men's editors, and we think will actually appeal men. Boots and duffles were especially strong.
The best part: prices are reasonable. A small purse is $178 and many key handbags are in the $250- $300 range.
Overall, Coach has a really good collection on their hands that should appeal to a lot of people, including the fashion crowd. Move over Cambridge Satchel, there's a new collection of stylish, inconspicuously well-crafted, vaguely retro handbags in town. Click through for more pics.
