Today, Nike unveiled 32 new team uniforms for the 2012 NFL season. We were quite impressed with the Seattle Seahawks' fashion-forward jerseys: navy and white with touches of neon green--so on trend! Love that color combo. So BCBG pre-fall.
Plus, having unintentionally taken in a little March Madness, we noticed that elite eight teams Baylor and Louisville teams were rocking some snazzy neon uniforms, too (questionable camo-print shorts aside).
So what does this have to do with fashion? Neons are hot for spring, and it's nice to see that sports teams are picking up on the trend. Are uniform designers watching the runways? We're starting to think so! Here are six team uniforms that may have been inspired by some of spring's hottest looks (but probably weren't). And just in case you were feeling sporty, we rate the playability of each runway look.
University of Louisville The Midwestern University nearly blinded millions of viewers when they trotted onto the court donning bright tangerine jerseys, which are almost exactly the same hue as this shift dress from Diane von Furstenberg's Spring 2012 collection.
Playability: 4/10 You might be able to make a few plays in this frock. There's a little slit, to make running a bit easier. Those quarter-length sleeves, however, are a big no-no. How would you make a free-throw shot with all that constricting fabric? And let's be real-- nobody's trying to sweat in silk!
This look from Richard Chai's Spring 2012 collection has a lot of the same tones as the UFL's California Redwoods team uniform.
Playability: 6/10 Pants and a top are a good choice for a casual game of football. Chai's look would have gotten extra points if the bottoms were made from spandex.
The UK's Oldham Athletic football club donned shocking pink uniforms to help raise money for the Victoria Breast Unit at The Royal Oldham Hospital. We kind of wish our high school soccer team opted for such a fun color-- perhaps we would have stayed on the team longer! Michael Kors also used the neon hue for this floor-sweeping gown in his Resort 2012 collection.
Playability: 2/10 We can envision tripping on that hemline, and falling face-down into the grass. Not cute!
The Seattle Sounders
Xbox is the official sponsor of the MLS Football Club. They outfitted the team in a neon yellowish-green uniform, a color that happens to be similar to that in Xbox's logo. This year, Christian Siriano gave us a spring collection rife with the same shade.
Playability: 0/10 We would think before running down a New York City street in this dress, much less playing soccer in it. Not with those ostrich feathers!
Baylor University's Fashion school made our 'Fashionista Top 20 Fashion Schools' list, so it's no surprise their basketball team's uniforms are so stylish. Being the fashion nerds we are, we immediately associated the color with Nanette Lepore's Spring 2012 show. (note: No, really-- during their "elite eight" game I said 'Hey! That's like, the same color Nanette Lepore used for spring!' I was greeted with several blank stares from both my male and female counterparts.)
Playability 5/10 Full skirt, cap sleeve silhouette... we could make this work!
The Seattle Seahawks
These new uniforms have almost the exact same color palette as this frock from BCBG Max Azria's Pre-Fall 2012 collection. Coincidence? We hope not.
Playability: 0/10 We think this look would be better suited for a Seahawks-themed cocktail party.
