Keith Haring‘s iconic, instantly recognizable graffiti renderings have probably graced a wider variety of surfaces than any other artist’s work. Today, they’ve been made into a Google doodle in honor of what would have been the late artist’s 54th birthday. But they’ve always worked particularly well on clothes and accessories.
Haring’s art transcended the art world from the very beginning with drawings in NYC subways and his influence on fashion has been significant. He designed stuff for Madonna in the ’80s and launched the Pop Shop in Soho, where he sold affordable things like t-shirts and pins emblazoned with his work. The Keith Haring Foundation has collaborated with several labels on collections following the artist’s untimely death in 1990.
