
When Allstate asked me to be part of their campaign to promote their new digital locker–a space online to store photos of all your insurable valuables (makes so much sense, right?)–they asked me, as the editor of Fashionista, what I would put in my digital locker. They assumed I’d pick a piece of clothing. But the thing is, I couldn’t come up with one item of clothing that was so valuable to me that I’d want to insure it. That’s the thing about fashion–trends come and go and I love a new dress when I first buy it and then, a few months go by, and…not so much.
It’s the accessories that I wear everyday–a diamond solitaire necklace passed down from my grandmother, a bracelet I haggled for at the Grand Bazaar in Istanbul, a vintage men’s watch, and a pair of bow-shaped earrings–that belong in that digital locker, I realized. They’re more valuable to me not because they’re expensive but because they were all given to me by people I care about and have stories behind them. Just look:
