Fifty Shades of Grey has been a breakout publishing phenomenon of Twilight proportions (if you substitute tweens for adult women, and vampires for S&M masters), so really it was only a matter of time until this happened: Yep, the bestseller is getting a merchandise line and it will likely include lingerie, fragrance and, of course, ‘adult’ products.
According to a press release, the book’s author EL James and her agent have signed a deal with independent agency Caroline Mickler, who will be responsible for building the brand worldwide (Mickler has already appointed CopCorp Licensing as the North American agent). Mickler is looking into an array of product categories, and given the book’s popularity, and that the movie rights have already been bought by Universal Pictures, the possibilities are truly endless. Indeed, we’ve already received at least one press release pegged to the bestseller about a line of jewelry (because the, um, silver jewelry looks grey). And let’s not forget that the book is already said to be driving sales of rope and neckties (seriously).
“The market’s interest in Fifty Shades of Grey as a brand is enormous,” Mickler said.”With continuing book sales and a film version keeping awareness high, we expect this property to make a very strong showing in a number of licensed categories over the coming months.”
According to the release, that means a Fifty Shades of Grey clothing line, to include both lingerie and apparel, as well as a beauty and fragrance line, could be coming to a store near you soon. Considering the already-present S&M vibes in fashion these days, we could actually see this collection working.
We’re less sure about how the brand will translate to bedding, home furnishings, or stationary–categories Mickler is also said to be considering. Of course the no brainer, would be a Fifty Shades line of adult toys, which could also be in the works.
