Dion Lee on His Shoe Collaboration with Kanye West: 'I Didn't Want to Make a Big Deal Out of It'

It's safe to say we kind of have a teeny crush on Aussie designer Dion Lee: Besides the fact that he makes sleek clothes for super cool girls, he is adorably charming in person. So when we heard he would be in New York City showing his resort collection, we popped by for a look and to chat with the designer, whose global star is on the rise. Lee showed for the first time outside of Australia last season in London, where he staged a small presentation for fall. While the Sydney fashion industry was disappointed to have lost him in their fashion week lineup, Lee explained that showing in his hometown would have meant staging three presentations in one year and that he wanted "concentrate on the clothes" instead. He confirmed to us that he'll be showing again in London in September, but this time it will be a full-on runway show.

While the Sydney fashion industry was disappointed to have lost him in their fashion week lineup, Lee explained that showing in his hometown would have meant staging three presentations in one year and that he wanted to "concentrate on the clothes" instead. He confirmed to us that he'll be showing again in London in September, but this time it will be a full-on runway show.

His resort looks were inspired by the lunar tides and how the moon affects the ocean--reflected in some cool rippling, aqua prints--and the theme continued with pieces fashioned from wetsuit material with "gill-like" cut-outs, and embossing that looked a bit like scales.

We also couldn't help but notice that the models were wearing shoes that looked suspiciously like the ones Kanye West designed for Lee's fall collection--and Lee confirmed they were indeed Kanye's. (Kanye tweeted he was "happy to design the shoes.") We had to know if those babies were going to available for purchase at all, or if there would be a continuing collaboration. "There's no current intention to sell them. It was just a collaboration that came about really naturally," Lee said. "[Kanye and I] have a mutual friend, a stylist I work with [Christine Centenera]. It just kind of went from there. We haven't talked about doing shoes ongoing."

As for why the collaboration with Kanye wasn't more publicized, Lee says, "I didn't want to make a big deal out of it." Fair enough. The spike-heeled pointy toe shoes work well with Lee's sleek brand of glam, so we will watch his models' feet carefully in upcoming seasons. And cross your fingers Lee and Kanye change their minds about not selling them!
