Last night, Sarah Jessica Parker and Anna Wintour hosted a very fancy fundraiser for Obama at Parker's West Village home. We didn't have $40,000 to spare for a ticket so we read everything we could about the event. Here's what we've learned about what went down last night:
The cost: $40,000 a head (with 50 guests in attendance, $2 million was raised)
Who was there: Sarah Jessica Parker (her husband Matthew Broderick wasn't there as he's starring on Broadway right now and the show must go on but son James Wilkie was), Anna Wintour, Michael Kors, Andy Cohen, Aretha Franklin, Meryl Streep and her husband Don Gummer, Olivia Wilde, Solange Knowles, Georgina Chapman, Chanel Iman, Teen Vogue's Lisa Love
The prep: Page Six is reporting that Anna Wintour overhauled the decor of SJP's house in advance of the fundraiser. The tabloid cites a source as saying “Anna was going crazy about the decorating. She was having a lot furniture removed and sending all of SJP’s tchotchkes upstairs...Some of the stuff in the house was shabby chic, and let’s just say, Anna wanted less shabby, and more chic." There was photo evidence that SJP's West Village townhouse received a thorough cleaning before the event, and that Wintour stopped by, but that's about it. Another source told Page Six, “Anna didn’t decide the décor. That was done in a meeting without her. Those pictures were just her walking into [the] house for her meeting. Furniture was being brought in and out, but not for Anna’s benefit to preside over." But! The New York Daily News is reporting that Wintour supervised the decor. So, who knows, really, but I'd be surprised if Wintour was totally hands-off about it.
The setting: Sarah Jessica Parker and Matthew Broderick's four-story West Village townhouse on Charles St. According to ABC the 50 donors gathered around one long table just inside the entrance. And as per the pool reporter via the Daily News: "There was 'ample' art on the walls, floor-to-ceiling bookshelves, a pair of marble fireplaces. The fireplace mantels were adorned with flowers, and so were the tables, which also had votives — Wintour’s touches, perhaps."
What went down: • Obama opened with a SATC joke--he was at Carrie Bradshaw's house after all. Joking about his fundraising schedule he said he would put it in "Sex and the City Terms"--that tonight was his "date night" with First Lady Michelle Obama, the Daily News is reporting. • Sarah Jessica Parker greeted the Prez with a "hug and a kiss" and called the First Lady "radiant and extraordinary." • When Obama noted that GM was back on top, Parker's son James Wilkie started clapping. According to The Hollywood Reporter, Obama reportedly replied, "He wanted to fire up the crowd," and Andy Cohen added, "He knows an applause line. Right on cue!” • According to NBC, Anna Wintour moderated a private Q and A session between the President and the guests
What they wore: Obviously other outlets don't care as much about this as we do but ABC described SJP's outfit thusly: "a navy lace cocktail dress with three-quarter length sleeves, a jewel-studded necklace and an enormous diamond ring." Sounds lovely. And from photos we don't have the rights to, we can tell you that Chanel Iman wore an orange short-sleeved shift with matching strappy heels (looks like Kors to us), Solange wore a white silk dress with a matching white blazer, and Wintour wore a printed shift with a gold necklace. Michelle Obama wore a black dress with a woven leather belt and a silk bolero type thing (she and the President had another fundraiser to attend following SJP's hosted by Mariah Carey at the Plaza).
