New York Fashion Week nights at Milk Studios have become legendary not only for the crowds, but for the new talent they unleash onto the New York fashion week scene. The breakout star of the fall 2012 was Ostwald Helgason, founded by Susanne Ostwald and Ingvar Helgason. The designers hail from places off the mainstream fashion map (Leipzig, Germany and Reykjavik, Iceland), but came together in London to launch their epynomous line in 2008. Fans of their unexpected silhouettes, dynamic stripes and color combination, and comfy knits include Moda Operandi, Susie Lau, and us, so we grilled the duo about their spike to success and how they are "making it" in fashion today.

What’s a typical workday like for you? Working hard all day in the studio with varied music to keep us upbeat!

What is the collaborative design process like for you? We work together on the overall look of the collection, but Susanne works on the print and colour and I look at the shape and silhouette. As far as inspiration goes, Susanne looks towards fine art and I look at new technology to create a combination of the natural and the hi-tech.

What inspired you to show your collection at NYFW? We just felt it was the right time to show in NYC and were lucky enough to be surrounded by a great team over there!

What’s the most fulfilling part of your job? When the collection we have been working on throughout the season comes together just before a presentation!

What do you see in store for you brand in the future? We hope to continue to show in NYC and to build a bigger international retail base. We've always wanted to look into developing our bag line as well as including shoes and maybe even a perfume!
