W's post-Stefano Tonchi revamp has been met with mixed reviews, but the glossy has invariably been successful with at least one thing: surprising us with their cover stars. From a nude Kim Kardashian to a tattooed Tom Cruise, good or bad, we rarely know what to expect each month and that's not something that can be said of some of W's competitors. This month's cover girls are definitely good surprises and Joan Smalls and Karlie Kloss make for two of the prettiest glossy covers we've seen recently. Though, is it just us, or is it a little weird how similar their skin and hair colors are? Questionable photoshopping aside, Smalls and Kloss were shot by the legendary Steven Meisel for the mag's July cover, under the headline Supermodern Style. They're also both dubbed "the new face(s) of fashion" and considering the fact that both of them are everywhere right now, we don't think that's overstating it one bit. In the accompanying Meisel-lensed editorial, "Supermodern Supermodels," Smalls and Kloss strike their fiercest poses against a simple grey background in a spread that's both glamorous and timeless. We're kind of obsessed. Could Smalls be any more gorge? The issue also pays its respects to one of the original supermodels (and future television star), Naomi Campbell, whose Emma Summerton-lensed spread you can peruse here)

If these covers mean we're going to start seeing more models on glossy covers again (that models just accompanied Cruise on W's June cover is worth mentioning), we are definitely happy campers.
