Last night’s grand opening of the first-ever Ugg for Men store may have been about the launch of Ugg’s men’s line in its new Madison Avenue showroom, but clearly, the main event was the brand’s spokesman, New England Patriots quarterback and Mr. Gisele Bundchen, Tom Brady. But more on that in a bit.
As far as Ugg Australia (it’s Ugg, not Uggs) is concerned, the bootie brand has undergone a major attempt at rebranding over the past few seasons. Yes, there are still the requisite classic Ugg boots, but Ugg has done its homework, and the slew of new products, which were nearly Ugg-recognizable (sorry), were pretty impressive. In addition to a full range of rich-looking leather footwear for men, Ugg now offers trendy heels, jackets, and bags–with nary a sherpa lining in sight.
But above all the fresh products lining its shiny new space, Ugg for Men had something else to offer us last night: Their spokesperson and campaign star Tom Brady, who, if he weren’t 6’4″, would have easily been swamped and/or trampled by the bustling crowd around him, so eager to make eye contact or just share the same air with the football great. Or maybe it just seemed that way–I’m originally from Boston (where the Brady-Bundchen brood reside part-time) and during football season, am reminded several times daily, by my Facebook friends, of the uncompromised greatness of their godly #12. Super Bowl, Shmooper Bowl–there’s always next year.
But in spite of his many man-fans, Tom (looking more Ripley than Brady with his geek-chic glasses and slicked back ‘do–though handsome as all hale, nevertheless) kindly obliged to a few of my questions regarding (the pregnant??) Gisele’s influence on his modeling, his Bieber-esque style motto, and what pop song he can’t get out of his head. Oh, and he touched me. There’s a photo to prove it.
Did your wife give you modeling tips for your Ugg campaign?
No, she did not give me any tips. But she’s very natural, so I think you just have to be natural. You have to be comfortable, and hopefully it comes off well. My career, my day job, is much easier than being in front of a camera. When you get in front of a camera, you’ve got to put a lot of trust in the people who are behind it and just hope it turns out well.
Would you ever get your sons involved in your campaign, make Ugg a family affair?
[My kids] are always rocking Uggs. They’re the cutest little things, you see these little tiny shoes show up, they’re great products for the kids. (Ed. Note: Ugg, maybe start sending some infant booties.)
Well we’re changing that!
Is there anything you would never be caught dead wearing?
I don’t know… I guess, you should never say never. (Ed. Note: He seemed very pleased with his response.)
And just one more thing–I heard [from Tom's manager] that you really like Carly Rae Jepsen’s “Call Me Maybe.”
Ya. That’s a good song. I heard it on the way and I said “God, who’s this?” That song’s kinda catchy.
So everyone, cross your fingers for a Brady/Bundchen rendition of “Call Me Maybe” to pop up next on YouTube.
