We Went With Kelly Cutrone to Surprise 10 High School Seniors With Prom Makeovers and Someone Cried (But Not Outside)

Ah, prom. The memories, the dresses, the awkward dances, and... Kelly Cutrone? Yep, if you attend Newburgh Free Academy in Newburgh, NY, Cutrone will be a part of your prom memories, too. We headed out to Newburgh Wednesday to meet high school senior Rachel, the winner of Nine West's Prom Crashers with Kelly Cutrone contest, which gave high school students the chance to win full prom makeovers (including hair and makeup, Nine West custom-made dresses and shoes, and prom and style tips from the publicist-cum-reality TV star). "I was just sitting with my assistant principal talking about college, and all of a sudden Kelly Cutrone pops in and says 'You've been Prom'd!'" Rachel said. "I was crying. I never thought this would happen to me, and this was the best way to end senior year." [Ed. note: She presumably was not told to go outside.]

Ten girls at Newburgh Free Academy were surprised on their last day of school when Cutrone showed up with a team of people from Nine West and Elizabeth Arden to create a whole new look for their June 15th prom. The dresses were custom designed to fit each girl's personality, and the shoes & bags were all hand-picked. Cutrone spent the day prepping the girls on how to attend an event in style, including lessons on "How to Walk in Heels" and "How to Graciously Accept a Gift Bag."

"Don't open the gift bag when they hand it to you," she advised. "It's very rude, and don't just throw things you don't want on the floor. Save the stuff from the gift bags, though. It's good for re-gifting." Very true.

Cutrone, who was recently appointed the "Ambassador of Culture & Noise" for Jones Group (Nine West's parent company), wanted to help the girls have a better prom experience than her own. "There's only a few images that stay with you your whole life: your birth picture, your one year picture, your communion or Bat Mitzvah, then your prom and your wedding," she said. "I wanted to make this a good one for these girls."

We wondered, who would Cutrone wear to prom if she had the chance to do it over? "I would not be the most popular girl at the prom. I would wear [Mason Martin] Margiela," she said with a laugh. "If I could go to prom with anybody, and we were both younger, I think Gabriel Burn and Jeremy Irons are really handsome. Johnny Depp is kind of hot, too."

Miss your chance to be dressed to the nines for your junior prom? Cutrone is hoping to repeat the contest again in 2013.
