Supposedly, Melanie Brown, Melanie Chisholm, Geri Halliwell, and Emma Bunton have all been keen to participate in the August 12 extravaganza entitled “A Symphony of British Music,” which is set to include performances by Queen, Annie Lennox, George Michael, and One Direction (along with Kate Moss and Naomi Campbell in a fashion segment). So it’s only fitting that the greatest British musical act of the last two centuries should also be included. But apparently, Victoria Beckham and her super busy, world-class-designer-and-mother-of-four gig has been holding the rest of the group back from achieving Olympic greatness. Until now.
According to the the Mirror, Vic finally hinted at an Olympics reunion during an Irish radio interview yesterday, saying: “If [the other Spice Girls are] up for something, then I certainly am. We are so proud to be English and we are very excited about the Olympics.” True, VB might just be excited to watch the games with the rest of the SGs from the comfort of Beckingham Palace. But we certainly hope not!
The Daily Mail points out that rumors of the Spice Girls reuniting for a performance at the Queen’s Diamond Jubilee ended with tweets of disappointment from the two Mels–and Mel C was also outspoken about the group’s apparent snub from the leaked playlist for the Olympics’ opening ceremony:
“I’d be really upset if the Spice Girls weren’t included in the Olympics, whether it be the opening or closing ceremonies or any other playlists, because I think we absolutely represented Britain in the 90s. We literally flew the flag–and Geri even wore it–around the globe.”
But could that initial snub possibly result in a surprise, high-profile, live performance? We’d generally lean towards ‘no,’ but then again “95%” is pretty good odds.
So would you love to see Geri back in her Union Jack onesie at the Olympics closing ceremony, or is it time for the Spice Girls to just move on?
