Arguably one of the most visible faces in fashion today, Liu Wen has established herself as the first ever Asian supermodel. From campaigns with brands like Estee Lauder, to walking the Victoria’s Secret runways and shooting editorials for every top magazine ranging from Vogue, Marie Claire, and Harper’s Bazaar to I-D and Numero, it’s no surprise Wen is ranked number six on the top fifty models on Models.com.
These days Wen says that a “staycation” is more of a vacation to her than anything else, even joking that she would probably never want to return to New York City ever again. “Even though I’m not from the city, I’ve actually never vacationed here like a tourist since I’m always working here,” she says.
From listening to Mariah Carey while on vacation to practicing posing underwater, Wen shares the ins and outs of her travels with us.
Fashionista: What’s the craziest thing you’ve ever done on vacation?
Liu Wen: I went watercycling and I went scuba diving to practice shooting underwater…and I don’t know how to swim!
What’s the worst thing that’s ever happened to you on vacation?
When I get a phonecall or email about my work plans right after vacation. Suddenly I feel pressure instead of being able to relax.
Who is the one person you travel with the most?
My parents, because I don’t see them very often, and I want to spend as much time with them as possible.
What is the one place you’d never go back to?
Haha, maybe I should say New York? Even though I’m not from the city, I’ve actually never vacationed here like a tourist since I’m always working here.
What is the most exotic meal you’ve had while on vacation?
An engagement dinner we had for my agent in China.
What do you wish you’d done differently on a vacation?
I should have worn a prettier swimsuit!
What’s one thing you’ve fallen in love with while on vacation?
I fell in love with listening to the sea. Even though I’ve worked a lot next to bodies of water, I don’t often take the time to enjoy them. Only when you vacation… when you’re sitting on the beach under the moonlight, hearing the sound of the waves, that’s when your mood is totally calm. It’s a really beautiful thing.
What is your favorite song of the summer?
A pretty classic song: Mariah Carey’s “Without You.”
What vacation experience would you like to have again?
I would definitely dive deep into the sea with the fish and look at the coral!
