The Olympics start in a few short weeks, and nail polish companies are capitalizing on the fact that everyone’s focusing on bringing home the gold. No athletic ability? No matter. Just swipe on some gleaming metallic lacquer.
Traditionally a cold-season trend, metallics are having a moment this summer. First Chanel dropped the golden Diwali on us for pre-fall 2012 (aka: get it now). Then back in March, while other companies were releasing the usual beachy pastels and neons, Tom Ford revealed his metallic shades for summer. Now there’s a veritable gold rush at the nail salon.
In addition to the gold, silver and bronze metallics that are everywhere, there are a few micro-trends, too. So-called “mirrored” metallics, which arguably started with those really smooth and shiny Minx manicures back in the day, are finally popping up in polish form. Thanks to highly reflective particles, these new metallics are extra shiny and high-tech. Colored metallics are also huge now–Essie and Deborah Lippmann both have newly-released “mirrored,” colored metallics.
