Welcome to our nail art column–the Top Coat! Every week we’ll be doing a step-by-step nail art tutorial. We’ve already told you the essentials you need for a good nail art kit, so gather your tools and try our next project.

The Olympic Games start today, and since no event is complete without some appropriately themed nail art, we’ve tricked out our tips with a chic variation of the iconic emblem--the five Olympic rings. No matter which country you’re supporting (we’re Team USA all the way, obviously), this incredibly easy DIY manicure unites all of us nail art fanatics. Let the games begin!

Step One: White Out After applying your base coat, paint all five nails a shade of stark snow white. Two coats should do it, but if it’s still not completely opaque, go ahead and add a third. Allow two minutes of drying time between each coat.

Step Two: Lady Of The Rings To stylishly recreate the symbolic Olympic rings, grab your nail polish pens. Starting at the tip of each nail, draw a half loop towards the wells (more commonly known as the sides). Paint the thumb blue; the forefinger yellow; the middle black; the ring green; and the pinky red. Go over each loop twice to thicken or darken, if necessary. Allow two minutes of drying time.

Step Three: Double Back On each nail, interlock the half-ring with another in a corresponding color. Paint the thumb yellow; the forefinger blue; the middle green; the ring red; and the pinky black. Allow two minutes of drying time.

Step Four: Go For The Gold And since we’re hoping that Team USA brings home a ton of gold, on each nail add a lash of gilded glitter for good luck. Start it where each ring connects, and slightly curve it upwards. After allowing it to dry for two minutes, set your Olympic tips with a slick, shiny topcoat, and you’re ready to compete!
