PARIS--Last night, Atelier Versace, Donatella’s bespoke line, opened Paris Haute Couture week. Versace returned to the Ritz Paris for the first time since Gianni Versace showed his last couture collection there in 1997. It was a collection true to the house’s DNA: cheeky, sexy, very, very glittery and with a front row packed with more glitter in the way of A-list celebs (including Jessica Alba, Pierce Brosnan, Elizabeth Banks, Christina Hendricks and M.I.A., just to name a few). As always, the clothes looked like they came from an improbable fairytale. This time, the universe imagined was one populated by Tarot card ladies and each look represented one of the elements: water, earth, the moon, the sun.

A cream cropped trench coat on Lindsey Wixson opened the show, composed entirely of patent strips, with a thick matching belt adorned with Roman numerals that resembled the gladiator wrestling belts the Versace men wore in Milan a few days prior.

Daytime pieces were classic Donatella: mini cocktail dresses, some with a bustier top, others held together by hand cut laces. A baggy golden trenchcoat kept shut by a wide belt furthered that gladiator-chic theme.

Evening dresses merged sharp, defined torsos–-either draped in chiffon or composed of patent piecings—-with flowy silk bottoms, creating a sheer trail. An occasional slit added that Versace ooh-la-la.

On each design, crystals, sequins, and tiny rose gold clasps shone like disco balls. A star-studded return in every way.
