To begin, a movie quote:
Bianca: There's a difference between like and love. Because, I like my Skechers, but I love my Prada backpack. Chastity: But I love my Skechers. Bianca: That's because you don't have a Prada backpack. --10 Things I Hate About You
Ever since Muiccia Prada attached that triangle Prada logo to a nylon backpack, the backpack earned its spot in fashion history. Prada backpack frenzy reached its peak in the '90s--as did mini backpack frenzy in general (see: all of Cher and Dionne's amazing outfits in Clueless, the above quote from 1999's 10 Things I Hate About You).
The fashion backpack waned for a while but now, with the resurgence of the '90s as a reference point combined with the trend towards all things heritage and crafted (in this case we believe it's called a rucksack), it's back. In a big way. And sometimes in a very expensive way, a la the Olsen's $39,000 croc backpack for the Row which they released earlier this year.
“You have to look fabulous and be a lifestyle brand and have a drink and be Twittering at the same time so you need hands free,” Simon Doonan told us, regarding the return of the backpack.
We figure you don't have $39,000 to spend on a backpack but that you might also want to try out this trend that is so much nicer to your back that toting an overstuffed it-bag on one arm.
