The Clothes: While the prevailing colors on the spring runways so far have been limited to black, white and the occasional splash of sea foam green, Christopher Bailey offered up shimmering, metallic, jewel toned colors. The brand’s signature trenches were done up in metallic silks, satins, and even feathers in shades of fuchsia, turquoise, green and bright red (as well as the traditional tan). Bailey didn’t just play with color–he also played with length. The trench got chopped and cropped into capelets, corsets, and capes. It was paired with shimmering pencil skirts and peplum bustier tops. A cropped bomber added some variety to the outerwear.
If Bailey bucked the black and white trend he was fully on board with the no pants trend kicked off by Marc Jacobs last week. Several looks–like a cropped belted trench on Liu Wen–were paired with nothing but ruched high-waisted shiny underwear. No pants–that’s what’s in for spring, guys.
The Hair & Makeup: Hair was worn down in loose waves and tucked into those signature trenches. It was enviable hair. I wanted to try to replicate it right away. Lips were stained a deep berry color while the rest of the face was left bare.
The Soundtrack: Christopher Bailey often uses musicians in his campaigns–music is obviously an influence and essential to Bailey’s vision for Burberry. For his spring 2013 he played the following tracks (Spotify ‘em now):
“Another Love” by Tom Odell
“People Help the People” (RAK Studios Session) by Birdy
“Open Up Your Arms by Ren Harvieu
“Walk On” by Ren Harvieu
The Vibe: This was my first ever Burberry show and it’s obviously the biggest, fanciest, most highly produced show of London fashion week–it’s the ticket to score. If you don’t believe me just check out the front row…
The Front Row: From left to right it went like this: Alice Eve, Victoria Pendleton, Aaron Paul, Dita Von Teese, Harry Styles, Dev Patel, Gabriella Wilde, Mario Testino and Harvey Weinstein. What I would give to figure out what kind of small talk went down between this motley crew…
Also there: Anna Wintour, Olympian Allyson Felix, Olivia Palermo, tennis player Andy Murray and his gf Kim Sears.
Celebrity We’d Most Like to See Wearing this Collection: Emma Watson, Dita Von Teese, Rihanna.
WTF Moment: When the walls of the tent automatically retracted to start off the show (they came back up to darken the tent for the metallic rainbow trench finale).
