MILAN–Last night, the first night of Milan fashion week, I trekked over to the Katie Grand for Hogan party at the historical (but not old by Milan standards) Casa degli Atellani. Hundreds of the industry’s best and brightest (including models Dree Hemingway and Cara Delevigne, decked out in Hogan shoes and the shortest of short shorts) gathered in the storied location, enjoying hors d’oeuvres, checking out the shoes, and of course, getting down on the dance floor.
[Ed. note: Here's the difference between New York fashion week and Milan fashion week: In New York, parties are held in warehouses and clubs, in Milan they're held in gorgeous, historical building with a fountain in the courtyard and frescos on the wall. That and in Milan they serve hunks of parmesan on plates.]
Anyway…amidst handfuls of parmesan and gulps of cocktails (jet lag cure), I managed to steal a few minutes with the woman of the hour: Katie Grand herself. Read on to see what the influential stylist (and now designer) had to say on how the collaboration came about, what the process was like–and why she’s a bit competitive with Choupette.
So, how’d this collaboration come about?
Um, I was so drunk and Diego [Della Valle] was so drunk and Andrea [Della Valle] was really drunk…[Laughs] No, I ran into them at Couture and they asked me if I’d work with them again and I said I’d love to because I’ve worked with them before and it was very nice, they make things quite easy.
How is the designing process different from styling?
Well, normally [as a stylist] I try–hmm, how shall is ay this in a nice way–I stand back at a certain point because it’s the designer’s name and they go out at the end of the show, and it’s really their thing. And [with Katie Grand Loves Hogan], it was mine and so… I was a nightmare.
I highly doubt that! But you have a right to be picky–it’s your vision.
Well it’s not even that it’s–well, obviously I’ve sat in studios for so many years now and seeing the process and people being fastidious about stitch length and edge pane…It was funny having to pay attention to the things that I’ve been aware of but I’ve never been responsible for.
She’s still at Giles’. She’s been very popular this week.
In case you didn’t know, we’re kind of cat freaks over here. Which do you think is more fashionable–cats or bunnies?
Well no one beats Choupette, do they? Clara does pretty well. Victoria Beckham has been her voice previously. I’m a bit competitive with Choupette but lets say we’re a good second.
Will we ever see a LOVE cover with Choupette?
I think she’s had quite a lot of coverage already. She’s got every magazine–and cover lines too! I mean, whoever is doing the PR on Choupette is doing a really good job.
