The Clothes: Lovely sounds like a trite word to describe a collection, but Lela Rose does pretty and lovely really, really well. There wasn’t an “unwearable” or unsophisticated piece in the luminescent 38 look collection, composed primarily of printed sheath and bodice dresses and the occasional nubby tweed suit. Rose used painter Jim Hodges’s light and flora-influenced work as a starting off point for the print-heavy collection, featuring diaphanous floral voile full of movement, landscapes printed across organza, textural guipure lace, and intricate, wispy metallic-edged embroidery. Delicate interlocking strips of thin chainmail, done the “Lela Rose” way, were draped delicately across the necks and backs of sheath dresses, in an interpretation of Hodges “Spiderweb” chain sculpture, one of the designer’s favorite works.
The Hair & Makeup: Stila’s Romy Soleimani created a nature-inspired eye look, featuring a mustard-yellow eyeshadow (Citrine Jewel eyeshadow—shade out later this year) around the tearducts, that extended to the midpoint of the eyelid above and below the lashline. Golightly eyeshadow (also out later this year) in a dark brown bark color smoked out the rest of the eye. To finish out the natural look, Ted Gibson created a simple “half-bun” low hair twist, with a matte finish. Essie’s “Good as Gold” gave nails a reflective and deep “mirror-like” illusion.
The Vibe: At The Studio at Lincoln Center.
The Front Row: Lauren Conrad, Mandy Moore (as Moore passed, all the PR people manning the event mutually made a “OMG, she is flawless” face.)
Celebrity We'd Most Like to See Wearing this Collection: The designer's choice? "Reese Witherspoon," she said. We could also see Michelle Obama, Sandra Bullock, Carrie Underwood and Kate Middleton.
WTF Moment: Not a WTF, but more of an “Awww” moment. Lela Rose’s daughter Rosie backstage in a (Hodges inspired?) large floral headband, playing with her puppy that kept roaming around backstage and eating discarded bagel bits. Kids are the new fashion accessory this fashion week. I also saw Rose consenting to let a Stila makeup artist apply a bit of see-through lip glaze on Rosie (no Toddlers and Tiaras here.)
