Markus Lupfer Spring 2013

LONDON–The Clothes: Cool colors like silver, pale pink, and icy blue were rendered even chillier in glittery Lurex and on a pale fish skin print. Since the colors and fabrics spoke so loudly, cuts were simple–boxy tops, mod-ish short sleeved A-line dresses, and sleveless shirt dresses. Lupfer also used sequins in playful ways, lining sleeves and making giant polka dots out of them. Of course no Markus Lupfer collection is complete without goofy graphic sweaters encrusted with sequins, and this season was no exception. His signature lips were there, as well as a ginormous diamond ring and my fave, one that proclaimed, “Chill.” Markus Lupfer will be offering shoes for the first time come spring, too. While they weren’t at the presentation because they’re currently being shopped around a NYC trade show, I saw pictures–brogues in dove grey patent leather, glitter Lurex heels, and lacy shoe boots that perfectly complement the quirky collection.

The Hair and Makeup: Space age platinum-haired pale girls sporting silver metallic ponytails. Remember when Alex Brownsell from Bleach told us she was trying to make metallic hair happen? She did it at Markus Lupfer, and we want some right now. The girls’ eyes had a bit of silver sparkle to match the hair and the collection.

The Vibe: It was in a stripped down basement space with concrete floors and white walls. Champagne, cupcakes and popcorn were flowing freely, as was a lot of enviable hair on the cool-girl London crowd. Models stood in a tableau that was black and white and vaguely Dr. Seuss-ian, while a bubble machine did its thing.

The Soundtrack: I actually don’t think there was any music playing. But I heard a pleasant little buzz in my ears thanks to jet lag, an empty stomach and one glass of champagne.

The Front Row: It was definitely a fashion-y insider crowd and relatively mellow.

What the Designer Said: “I was obsessed with the word ‘obsession.’ So what are you obsessed with? What do girls love? A diamond, a big sparkle. That developed into the colors–a diamond is quite light, quite silvery, almost transparent. I was thinking of transparency and airiness.”

Celeb We’d Like to See Wearing It: Agyness Deyn

WTF Moment: I was confronted with an entire table full of delectable looking cupcakes and chose not to eat one. Stupid.
