Orla Kiely Spring 2013

The Clothes: Perfect. Kiely was inspired by a ’60s beach vacation as well as Raul Difi and Slim Aarons. I fell in love with boatneck babydoll dresses with sheer floral panels, peter pan collared shirts, swing coats and cropped trousers adorned with sailboats and swimmers, daisy printed crop tops, perfect little jackets and trenches and smart-looking patent leather handbags. I wanted literally everything.

The Film: Rather than have models standing around looking bored in the clothes, a short film was shown starring the gorgeous Hannah Holman who wore Kiely’s clothes perfectly. Maximilla Lukacs, who also directed that Wren video that Tavi was in, directed this film, which was shot in Palm Springs in 110 degree weather. Leith Clark styled and creative directed. The video (stills in the gallery below) had a relaxed, dreamy vibe that represents the collection well. Holman did not look half as miserable as we would have been in such extreme weather conditions.

The Hair & Makeup (in the film): Bardot-esque with matte, voluminous, undone white-blonde hair, heavy eyeliner on the top. It didn’t hurt that the model, Hannah Holman already kind of looks like Brigitte Bardot.

The Soundtrack: DJ Tennessee Thomas spun sweet retro tunes.

The Vibe: Girly, happy and British. Every time I’ve been inside Orla Kiely’s store, I’ve thought, “I should just stop shopping other places and buy my entire life here.” From clothes to handbags to notebooks to lamp shades, they have everything you need to create your own super cute British ’60s universe. For this presentation, they parked in the store an actual ’60s caravan that they found, redid the inside of, and wallpapered in one of Kiely’s signature prints. Inside the caravan was a mini screening room that seated four. Overheard inside: “Were you saying it would be fun to hotbox this?” There was no hotboxing that we’re aware of, but there were Pimm’s cups and a Van Leeuwen ice cream truck (which stayed outside).
