The Clothes: For Y-3’s 10th anniversary, designer Yohji Yamamoto gave us what we’ve come to expect – brilliant, conceptually challenging sports-meets-street wear for the sartorially adventurous sporty type. The theme was “walking backward into the future,” and this meant acid blue, mesh layered dresses for women, elongated, black linen vests for the guys, and oversize, triple stripe wrapped shorts for both sexes. Manipulation of the brand’s signature stripes was a constant, as was the integration of color-popping tropical prints.
The Hair & Makeup: Slicked back coifs for the boys; athletic, fly-away-free ponies for the girls. Clean faces all around.
The Soundtrack: Old school Atari soundtrack meets techno club beats, with Kiss’s “I Was Made For Loving You” for the closing walk
The Vibe: The warehouse at St. John’s Center was transformed into a dark, cave-like space with an incredible, 3-D video projection as a runway backdrop. Shape-shifting black and white lights gave way to psychedelic colors and neon brights as the models walked.
The Front Row: A$AP Rocky, Isabel Lucas, Jesse Williams, and much to the excitement of nearly every woman and probably most men in the room, David Beckham.
Celebrity We’d Most Like to See Wearing this Collection: Beckham, any and all of his current and former teammates.
WTF Moment: The collective freak-out that ensued when Beckham entered the space.
What the Line Sheet Said: “The Y-3 collection explored iconic elements of the label’s pioneering aesthetic: the acid-bright prints; the bold, voluminous silhouettes; the graphic three-stripe motif; and the influential breakthroughs in footwear and apparel.”
Swag: A cedarwood, lavender, and patchouli scented candle that came in a deceptively large bag.
