Lily Ashwell’s Vintage-Inspired Wares Are Not Too Shabby

Up-and-coming designer Lily Ashwell admits her mom Rachel Ashwell (of Shabby Chic fame) may have influenced her design philosophy and love of vintage, but after her seeing her debut collection, we’re fairly certain she’ll have no trouble a making name for herself independent of her lineage.

The Los Angeles-based designer just launched her first collection, and we’re already kind of obsessed. It’s a tightly-edited assortment of easy, feminine frocks, dungarees, sweaters and blouses using vintage-inspired silhouettes and high-quality artisanal fabrics.

Though the collection is small (in a good way), Ashwell began developing the concept a year and a half ago. “I like there to be an element of intimacy, as one of a kind and personal as possible,” she told us over the phone last week. Everything is made in L.A. and she plans to keep collections small, choosing to focus on creating “special” pieces with painstaking attention to detail that come together to tell a story. For instance, this collection features deadstock trims, one of a kind vintage buttons, and hand-knitted sweaters that are signed by the woman who knitted them. Prices range from $195 – $595.

She tends to get inspired by “a landscape or a place” and this time it was Wales, England, with its seaside landscape and contrasting cold weather. She aimed to create a summer vibe in the winter, and we think she captured that perfectly.

As far as what’s next for Ashwell, she plans to keep “nurturing her baby,” as she refers to the line, continuing to release small, special collections. Though, further down the line, she wouldn’t rule out doing something along the lines of mom Rachel’s ‘Simply Shabby Chic” Target line. “I think one of the most exciting things about making clothes is that clothing is such a big part of everyone’s life and it’s always exciting to reach as many people as possible. I would do something that could reach a larger audience…at some point.”

For now, see below for an exclusive super sweet video Lily created for the collection with new music written & performed by her friend Jade Castrinos from Edward Sharpe and the Magnetic Zeros, as well as the full look book. We pretty much guarantee you’ll fall in love.

The collection is available at lilyashwell.com and at the Rachel Ashwell shabby chic couture boutique.
