Tonight America voted for four more years of Barack Obama. Which means us fashion writers have four more years to document, analyze and gush over Michelle Obama's wardrobe. We gush because she obviously enjoys and embraces fashion--she mixes high end designers with high street fashion and supports emerging American designers.
The First Lady wore a burgundy brocade Michael Kors shift to celebrate Tuesday's win and paired it with a cropped black cardigan and one of her signature brooches. In what has become a hallmark of Michelle Obama's accessible style, the dress is a repeat, one that the Huffington Post notes she wore to public appearances in 2009 and 2010. When thousands are still stranded without homes, power, and basic neccesities in Hurricane Sandy's aftermath--not to mention the millions that are still jobless--it's a sensitive choice.
Four years ago, Michelle Obama went a bit flashier in a memorable black and red Narciso Rodriguez dress. And four years ago, first kids Malia and Sasha were just that, kids. Tonight they are taller, gorgeous as ever, and stole some of their mom's fashion spotlight in adorably flouncy brightly colored skirts. Cathy Horyn tweeted, "The Obama girls might be the fashion news tonight--full skirts, bright color, cute." You couldn't help but smile. (I'm still smiling.)
