Anna Wintour's Boyfriend Comes to Her Defense Over 'Male Chauvinism'

We don't hear about Shelby Bryan, Anna Wintour's bf since 1999, very often. A telecommunications tycoon and venture capitalist, Bryan will occasionally accompany her to tennis matches and fancy events but prefers to fly under the radar, it seems.

However, the bespectacled millionaire was pretty forthcoming during a recent interview with the Daily Telegraph, in which he was inevitably asked about the rumors that President Obama is considering Wintour for an ambassador job.

Addressing the media scrutiny Wintour has come under both for her campaign fundraising efforts and ambassador rumors, Bryan said (via The Daily Mail),

It’s a little bit of male chauvinism.

It’s not just Anna - I see powerful women who really get slammed for being too forthright or running their business in a very determined way.

If [former GE CEO] Jack Welch were being named as a potential ambassador, people wouldn’t be saying, ‘Oh, but hang on, Jack’s a little strict in the way he runs his companies.'

And then there's that movie the press always likes to mention when discussing Wintour...

I see negative articles resting largely on that fictional film, The Devil Wears Prada. They drew conclusions from that...Everybody who knows Anna thinks that’s a joke.

As for whether Wintour would actually do it, Bryan says he "thinks she would do a great job if it ever happened," (so do we) but that he's "not expecting it to happen."

"She has a great job at Vogue that she loves very much. So I don’t know about that."

Aww, Shelbs. Obviously Wintour doesn't need anyone to come to her defenses (plus, she has Donald Trump endorsing her all over the place), but we think Bryan said just the right thing. She's a lucky gal! Especially given Bryan's taste in boots.
