In Les Misérables, the character of Fantine has much bigger issues to deal with than whether her shoes are made of leather--she was probably thrilled to have any shoes at all. But Anne Hathaway, who plays her in the upcoming movie version, has different priorities.
According to Footwear News, all of Fantine's shoes had to be custom-made to be vegan for the actress.
"[Hathaway]'s vegan, so we couldn't use any animal materials on the shoes for her character Fantine," costume designer Paco Delgado told the trade. "We had to find very specific shoemakers to create lace-up boots and ankle boots."
Hathaway showed her commitment to vegan footwear again last week when she walked the red carpet for the NYC premiere of Les Mis in head-to-toe spring 2013 Tom Ford, wearing a custom-made vegan version of his gladiator dominatrix boots.
Hathaway became a hard-core vegan after filming The Dark Knight Rises. At the time she told USA Today that a minor pizza binge led her to trade vegetarianism for veganism:
After I finished the rooftop fight, I ate four slices of pizza and split a bottle of red wine with my guy. I hadn't eaten like that in months. I felt so ill. By the time the movie finished, I decided to give veganism a try. You can't go hog-wild as a vegan.
At least you can still go hog wild with your footwear.
