Jason Wu Gives Us a First Look at His Film for New Line Miss Wu

Do those different facets mean different categories for the line?
Yes definitely. The first year, the collection is pretty concise–there’s 40-60 pieces and it’s centered around great blouses, sweaters, outerwear. So going forward we’ll be looking at different categories–definitely doing accessories.

You mentioned that how she does her makeup is very much a part of your vision of the Miss Wu girl. Would you ever think about doing a beauty line?
Yeah I think the possibilities are endless. It’s all about character building, its like writing a story, and each collection is a new chapter in her life.

If Miss Wu were a film character or movie star, past or present, who would she be?
Marianne Faithfull, definitely.

You’ve also said that Miss Wu represents your personality. What are the top three words you’d use to describe your personality?
Hmm… mischievous, humorous, and…easy-going, which people don’t expect from me because the clothes I make, you know the clothes from [my main line] are quite womanly and sophisticated and people always think I’m very serious. In fact, I’m not very. I mean in some ways I am serious–like when it comes to my work–but my personality is not so serious.

And do you think Miss Wu exemplifies this not-so-serious side of yourself?
You can see the Jason woman is much more polished and manicured. The Miss Wu girl, on the other hand, is she’s a little more worn in, a little grittier, her hair is a little messier, her makeup might be from the night before. But the base of it all, like with my Jason line, is that it hits on all the things I love.

You’ve accomplished so much already in your career–and you’re only 30! What is next for the Jason Wu brand?
World domination! You have to dream big.

You’re well on your way! Do you have any advice for those aspiring to be in the industry?
Work really hard, and pay attention to the reason why you got into whatever you’re doing in the first place. There are so many facets to the fashion industry and sometimes things can get blurry. I always just wanted to make beautiful clothes, and I never lost sight of that. So I would say, make it about the clothes, make it about the work, and don’t let anything distract from that.
