It happened. An intern at Harper’s Bazaar sued Hearst for violating state and federal wage and hour laws by not paying her when she was doing the work of a paid employee (which is basically what a fashion internship is). In addition to prompting discussions over the fairness and legality of internships and possibly making other big publishing houses rethink their policies, it turned into a class action suit.
