The Barneys New York bi-annual warehouse sale is the stuff of legends, and easily one of the most anticipated shopping events in NYC every August and February. But now you can get deals on designer duds all year round, minus the aggressive shoppers throwing elbows at you: Barneys just announced it’s launching a full time off-price website.
Barneyswarehouse.com will debut this coming Monday, WWD is reporting. You can expect to see past season merch listed for up to 75% off, similar to what is carried in Barneys’ 13 brick and mortar outlet stores (most of which are in NY and California, with a few scattered in the South). Unlike some retailers who purchase items specifically for their outlet chains, Daniella Vitale, chief merchant and executive vice president of Barneys, told the trade that Barneys uses outlet stores primarily for liquidation and the new website will be an extension of that.
Barneys acknowledges that online shopping is where the growth is. The retailer trialed the online warehouse sale concept last August before the brick and mortar sale, and it was a success for the company. “I certainly think [the website] could be our biggest store,” Vitale told WWD. “The online business is explosive and the fastest-growing business we have.”
It sounds like Barneys will grow its main luxury business online, too. Vitale said that home items from the store’s Chelsea Passage area and beauty are under-represented online now.
So what about those famous real-life sales?
The sale will take place as usual next month from February 14-24. After that, however, the format is changing. The Barneys warehouse sale was originally primarily a men’s sale, and it’s going back to that model come September, when the sale “will turn heavily towards men’s.”
While it’s sad that such a popular New York institution is coming to an end, we can’t really complain about being able to sit around in our pajamas and potentially find a PS1 for 75% off.
