Vogue Italia's January 2013 cover isn't just the first of the year--it's the first cover in the magazine's history to feature a Chinese model on her own, according to Models.com.

Steven Meisel shot model Fei Fei Sun in an homage to '50s supermodel China Machado under the cover line 'Global Life.'

Vogue Italia says of the cover and issue:

"Fusion elegance. The language of style is universal: border-free. Thus, by evoking the exotic and sophisticated allure of China Machado, the fusion icon of the Fifties, a story of elegance and refinement is recounted."

Though fashion has become an increasingly global affair--and China, in particular, a driving force in the industry--magazines still tend to present a pretty narrow (read: White) beauty ideal and covers featuring solo Asian models (or other women of color for that matter) are still few and far between. Hopefully Vogue Italia's latest cover is a sign that that's changing--and that more covers featuring ethnically diverse models are on their way.
