Steven Meisel shot model Fei Fei Sun in an homage to ’50s supermodel China Machado under the cover line ‘Global Life.’
Vogue Italia says of the cover and issue:
“Fusion elegance. The language of style is universal: border-free. Thus, by evoking the exotic and sophisticated allure of China Machado, the fusion icon of the Fifties, a story of elegance and refinement is recounted.”
Though fashion has become an increasingly global affair–and China, in particular, a driving force in the industry–magazines still tend to present a pretty narrow (read: White) beauty ideal and covers featuring solo Asian models (or other women of color for that matter) are still few and far between. Hopefully Vogue Italia‘s latest cover is a sign that that’s changing–and that more covers featuring ethnically diverse models are on their way.
