Katy Perry Wore a Tiny Version of Aretha Franklin’s Famous Bow Hat to the Inauguration

Katy Perry–an outspoken Obama supporter (I mean, nothing says support louder than Obama nail art, right?)–was in attendance at the Inauguration festivities this morning along with bf John Mayer.

Perry chose to give a little r-e-s-p-e-c-t to Aretha Franklin, who famously sang at Obama’s first Inauguration back in 2009. She tweeted the above picture and said, “Big inauguration, tiny Aretha hat.”

The hat Aretha wore, by then-unknown milliner Luke Song, got a lot of attention (and still does, according to NPR), and yes, it even had its own short-lived Twitter account.

Perry appreciates a good wardrobe prop, so she added a mini version of the famous bow hat to her floppy fedora. She told People, “I had it made. I thought it would be fun to do a shout-out back to four years ago.”

A very fitting homage, and we applaud Katy for keeping the cupcake bra out of the fashion equation today. (HuffPo says her striped coat is Rodarte. California girls sticking together.)
