Kate Upton’s modeling career is continuing on an upward trajectory: The model just landed another plum commercial gig, this time with footwear brand Sam Edelman.
According to WWD, Edelman called Upton in as a potential for the campaign after he spotted her in a pair of Edelman equestrian boots. Turns out that Edelman and Upton hit it off–thanks to their mutual love of horses–and the rest is ad campaign history. Or at least that’s what Edelman is hoping for.
“It felt like the right time,” Sam Edelman told the trade. “We had a major ad campaign with Charlotte Kemp Muhl 18 months ago. [By choosing Kate,] it was a hell of a decision to go with an indie girl.” We’re not sure that a popular Sports Illustrated cover girl qualifies as “indie,” but we’ll grant that she may not totally be a household name yet. But there was another reason Edelman wanted her.
David Lipman, who shot the images, told WWD, “We chose Kate because she isn’t stick thin. She’s beautiful and all-American.”
Her not-stick-thin body is on full display in the ads. Upton lounges around in lingerie in all the images, evoking an “old Hollywood” feeling.
Kate Upton’s agency, IMG, is predicting big things for the model, and a campaign like this is still just a stepping stone. Ivan Bart, a senior VP and managing director at IMG, told the New York Daily News, “Kate’s only beginning to first realize the power that she has… A lot of products are now approaching us because she’s accessible and women are captivated by her. Last year it became very clear in my mind that she was a supermodel like Cindy Crawford.”
