Ah, Valentine’s Eve. A time to run out and get cards for your parents that can still technically be dated prior to February 14. A time to cherish your Facebook and Instagram feed before they become inundated with photos of flowers, chocolates, and Pandora bracelets. A time to… go shopping!
Tibi designer Amy Smilovic gets that the very idea of Valentine’s Day is enough to warrant some serious retail therapy in some people (ie: us), so she created an entire capsule collection around it! She also took some time to indulge us in a nosy Q and A about making the new line, her worst Valentine’s Day and what to do if you’re single on the most romantic day of the year.
Fashionista: What made you want to design a Valentine’s themed capsule?
Amy Smilovic: Typically we don’t create holiday themed capsule collections, but the idea came about in a design meeting and I thought it sounded new and different. Our e-commerce site gives us the ease and fluidity of executing these types of ideas on Tibi.com, without having to solely rely on our retailers to pick up the product.
How did you go about making sure it didn’t get too cutesy?
We took a typically playful heart and added some edge by designing with a digital flare or replicated black lace. Printed on Tibi’s minimal, sporty silhouettes in black/white and navy/red color combinations strays away from the overuse of red and pink associated with the holiday. The silk camis, boxy tops, and sweatshirts create an eased-out, relaxed look to the signature hearts.
Have you ever had a horrible or awesome Valentine’s day? Can you tell us about it?
One of my boyfriends did not believe in cut flowers – he thought they were wasteful. On Valentine’s Day he showed up at the door with a planted bulb. I was sad, and of course I promptly killed it with lack of watering, and poor green skills.
Any advice for girls who don’t have a Valentine on the big day?
Valentine’s Day is about celebrating with family, friends, pets, and any other loved ones! It’s a good chance to get your single girlfriends out for a nice dinner, you never know who you may meet.
