During last night's Oscars red carpet, we were on the lookout for any fashion choices absurd enough to turn into memes.
Her nipples. As everyone on Twitter/the internet noticed, they were pointing out at us like daggers.
And, most importantly, they inspired their own Twitter (or just one of them did?): Hathaway Nipple. And it's actually pretty clever. Some highlights: "We'd just like to point out that we won Best Supporting Actress without *any* support," and, "Anne left her bra on Crosby Street." (Seriously, why were we supposed to care about her friends on Crosby?)
However, before we start calling out Anne Hathaway for having bizarrely pointy nipples, it's worth addressing some theories. The Cut believes it wasn't her nipples at all, but darting sewn into the dress. Writes Charlotte Cowles, "The final word on the subject: Anne Hathaway's pink Prada dress just had very pointy darts at the bust. (BUT STILL.)"
The New York Times' Eric Wilson also weighed in, suggesting the nipple emphasis was intentional:
Her last-moment choice was a pale pink dress that appeared to have been styled after a household apron, as potent a symbol of feminine repression as ever there was. Only the dress, made by Miuccia Prada with a loosely tied back, featured a bodice that was intentionally subversive. The seams along the bust were so sexually suggestive that many viewers at home believed they were seeing part of Ms. Hathaway’s anatomy.
Regardless of whether it was darting or actual nipple (we think it was both), that general area of her chest was distracting. So, was it intentional or a side effect of choosing a different dress at the last minute?
