Balenciaga vs. Alexander Wang vs. Altuzarra: The Fur Mittens Edition

Yesterday's most buzzed about shows were easily Alexander Wang and Altuzarra. In addition to showing on the same day and being generally hot young designers, Wang and Altuzarra had something else in common: they both featured huge fur mittens in their fall collections. However, as is often the case, Balenciaga did it first.

Yesterday's most buzzed about shows were easily Alexander Wang and Altuzarra. In addition to showing on the same day and being generally hot young designers, Wang and Altuzarra had something else in common: they both featured huge fur mittens in their fall collections.

Wang's were a spin on boxing gloves--boxing being the theme for his fall collection--while Altuzarra's were an extension of the luxurious mounds of fox fur he used on outerwear and even some dresses in his fall collection.

However, as is often the case, Balenciaga did it first. There were several pairs of big, furry gloves in Nicolas Ghesquière's pre-fall 2009 collection.

That Ghesquière did something first is not at all surprising. But it has a special significance for Wang, who, as we all know, is Balenciaga's new creative director and has been spending a lot of time combing through the house's archives over the past few months. Inspiration? Coincidence? Too derivative? You be the judge.
