DKNY Fall 2013: Throwback

Donna Karan’s fall 2013 DKNY collection closed to a mash-up of “New York, New York” and “Juicy.” Everyone in the audience (myself included) couldn’t help but smile as Sinatra morphed into Biggie, and as an exuberant, street smart, ’90s-tinged collection walked before them.

The DKNY show notes announced that the collection “has its way with iconic classics.” This came on the heels of the announcement of a re-release of classic DKNY pieces from the ’90s at cool-kid central, Opening Ceremony. There were sporty staples that recalled ’90s street style–we’re talking oversized sweatshirt tops, anoraks, maxi skirts, varsity jackets and knit beanies–but it was all thoroughly modern, too. The sweatshirt tops were neoprene and done in color-blocked panels. The varsity jacket was done in suiting fabrics with leather sleeves–a nod to menswear inspiration which manifested in slim dress coats as well. And then there were pieces that weren’t nostalgic at all: Flirty neoprene skater dresses were perfect for the TV starlets–Shay Mitchell, Holland Roden and Victoria Justice–who sat in the front row.
