Gabby Douglas on Nail Art, Her Olympic Hair Controversy, and That Time She Met Ben Affleck

Her four inch Louboutins prevented her from doing any tumbling passes down the runway, but Gabby Douglas still drew the biggest cheers at last night’s Heart Truth Red Dress runway show. I spied Douglas’s megawatt smile in the backstage pre-show chaos and grabbed a few minutes with her while she getting her nails painted. Punctuating her speech with “Oh my gosh”-es and excited giggles, she told me her thoughts on nail art, Ben Affleck, and dismissing that whole Olympics hair controversy once and for all.

Fashionista: So we hear you are starring in a new ad for OPI. Tell us about that, are you excited? Gabby Douglas: Very excited. I did the color for "Strawberry Margarita." It was so fun shooting for them. I always love doing jumps and leaps and flips. They had a trampoline so I did my whole thing.

What is your favorite color in the range? I love the "Strawberry Margarita." It’s classy. It’s pink, but not too light. It’s just perfect.

How do you feel about nail art? I love nail art. You should see how many nail polishes I have! I have a lot. I love doing crazy nail colors or a classic, like a nude. I am so into nails.

Do you do your own nail art? I don’t! My sister is like an artist. She does it for me. I love the classic flower. Or I do a snowman in the winter for Christmas. It depends upon the month.

What about medals? I think you should do some medals on your nails! Oh, that is a good idea! I’m going to do that now.

Are you looking forward to fashion week? Who are some of your favorite designers? I am so looking forward to fashion week. I’m so excited, this is my first time walking on a runway. I am wearing Pamella Roland. And I wore Pamella for the Golden Globes, so I love her and her style.

So Beyoncé says her alter-ego is Sasha Fierce when she goes out on stage. When you go out on the runway today, what will be the name of your alter-ego? Alter-ego. Hmm. (Pause) Gabby.

Have you changed your hair care or hair style since the Olympics controversy? Nope. It’s definitely the same. I haven’t changed it.

Do you ever fight with your mom about what to wear? Did you have input into what you would wear today? Yeah. I’m like, “I don’t want to wear [something.] It’s itchy.” And she’ll be like just wear it! [For today’s dress], we all had a little bit of input. My mom is my stylist. She’s dressed me for several events. My mom is absolutely amazing with fashion.

Who is the best famous person you have met so far? Oh, that’s a hard one. Hmm. I’m just going to toss a name out there. Ben Affleck.

Why Ben Affleck? Well, he is very good looking. (Giggles.) I remember when I met him, he said, “I’ve never met anyone more athletic than you.”

Gabby then adorably enthused to her makeup artist about how much she loves her makeup job and how she “loves how classy” it makes her look. Oh Gabby. Shine on, you golden girl.
