What do you do when you’re a gorgeous it girl and Karl Lagerfeld wants to give you a beard? If you’re Alexa Chung, you take a stand.
Remember last year’s Karl Lagerfeld/Carine Roitfeld collab The Little Black Jacket: Chanel’s Classic Revisited? Most of the book’s subjects, from Elle Fanning, to Julia Restoin-Roitfeld, to Sofia Coppola, all looked pretty and like themselves. However, Karl and Carine wanted to give Alexa Chung more of a transformation.
“I walked in and Carine Roitfeld was like: ‘You’re going to be a boy, we see you as a tomboy,’” Chung told Vogue UK.
I thought ‘ok’, and I sat down and [Former Chanel makeup artist] Peter [Phillips] said: ‘So. We’re going to make the brow stronger, and we were thinking stubble for the face.’ And I was like: ‘Can we all STOP thinking stubble for the face’. But they decided to give it a go. I looked like Oliver Twist.
So at least she gave it a try, but in the end Chung “fought not to have a beard.”
“They thought I’d be down for it, they thought I’d think it was funny, but I was like ‘not if Dakota Fanning is being Marilyn Monroe.’”
We’re a little bummed we didn’t get to see Chung with a beard, but we have to say we’re impressed she had the balls to stand up to Carine and the Kaiser. We’d probably shave our heads if they told us to.
Oh and if you’re still wondering what Alexa Chung would look like with a beard, here she is with Waris Ahluwalia’s.
