God bless the stylist, the unsung hero during fashion week who mixes and matches pieces together to create not only a cohesive collection, but strong individual looks. When done poorly, it’s quite obvious. But on the contrary, when it’s good, it’s magical. Such was the case with Michelle Smith’s fall 2013 Milly collection, Illumination, which was inspired by the city lights of New York City.
Full of sparkles, holograms, and all things that shimmer, it was futuristic while still being wearable. The entire collection was cohesive, young, and fresh. From sparkling shirts that were styled with muted cableknit sweaters or plaid skirts, the collection was a very strong and interesting mix of 90’s grunge and 2000’s galactic in the best way possible.
“I love that balance with kind of more day fabrics like chunky knits and relaxed silhouettes,” Smith told us backstage. And it was very visible in her ensembles: Smith struck a perfect balance, placing bright pieces with oversized wool coats, knits and heavy sweaters.
Smith told us that her crocodile embossed skirt with a very subtle hologram effect worn with a matching sweater was the new, fun modern day suit. We couldn’t agree more. If this is what the future of fashion looks like, sign us up, we want to be with Milly.
